A Typical Year at Bates
A week before regular classes begin, the returning dance students often begin rehearsals with a visiting guest choreographer to prepare for a twenty-minute program for the First-Year Student Orientation Program. The Parents and Families Weekend concert includes new works in progress by guest artists and students and finished pieces from earlier in the semester or the previous year. The Fall Concert of Professional Works consists of new works by guest professional choreographers and faculty, performed by the Bates College Modern Dance Company.
Introduction
Bates College offers a major and a minor in dance based in the tradition of dance as a performing art form. Integrating both theory and practice within the framework of a liberal arts education, the Bates Dance program develops an understanding of art, culture, and humanity through dance.

New Student Orientation
This dance concert is part of the welcome activities for the new students. Included are pieces from the previous semester and a brand new work by a guest choreographer learned the week before the semester begins.
Parents & Families Weekend
Performed in the Schaeffer Theater, a full concert is produced for visiting parents and families of Bates Students. It highlights the breadth of the program and the spirit of the Bates College Dance Company.
Bates College Modern Dance Company
Bates College Modern Dance Company is a non-competitive performing group in which students have the opportunity to create and perform their own work as well as to experience working with guest choreographers.
